Bathroom Remodeling Cost & Price Guide: What is the Average Cost to Remodel a Bathroom?
Average Cost = $5,000-$8,000
Best/Cheapest Price = $100-$500
Typical Hourly Rate = $50-$75 per hour
Remodeling a bathroom can be one of the best investments you make, however it can become very costly if you don’t keep an eye on your finances. If you want to keep your finances in check, it’s important for you to have a good understanding of the costs associated with your remodeling plans.
The Cost of Remodeling a Bathroom
There are a number of different factors that can influence bathroom remodeling costs (including if it’s a small bathroom). While these factors will be slightly different for each individual remodeling job, there is still a lot of consistency for the major considerations.
If your idea of remodeling a bathroom is just fixing some faucets and the grout between your tiles, then you’re looking at a low-cost effort, and maybe even something you can do yourself. However, if you’re planning on making your bathroom bigger, changing your existing tile to natural stone, moving a toilet or shower, adding a new tub, etc…then you could end up spending tens of thousands of dollars. Of the many things that influence the cost of your bathroom remodel, the following are by far the most important to keep in mind.

The Cost of Contractors
There is bound to be work that you are not qualified to do yourself when you are doing a bathroom remodel. There are some jobs that require the hand of a seasoned, certified professional if they are to be done properly. This brings your bathroom remodeling costs up quite a bit, as these professionals don’t work for free.
Some contractors will cost more than others. For example, plumbing and electrical contractors are notorious for their steep hourly prices. This high price stems from the significant amount of work and training that they had to go through in order to do what they do. The higher amount of regulation that is foisted upon plumbers and electricians also drives up their cost of doing business. These costs get passed on to you when you hire them.
If you want to save money on contractors, keep the following in mind:
- Contractors may be willing to work for a lower overall rate if you offer them work in bulk
- Contractors with a lot of experience cost more per hour, but work more efficiently and end up costing you less in the long run
- Contractors will often add a 20% markup to whatever materials they buy for the project, so buy the materials yourself
- Bathroom remodeling prices will generally be higher when you have to hire contractors for specialty projects like creative masonry or custom fixtures
The Average Cost to Remodel a Bathroom
First and foremost, you should understand that any “average” bathroom remodeling costs you read about for a bathroom remodel will only be an estimate. There is no way for any resource to give you a fully accurate estimate, since these estimates rely on a number of different factors. Your location, the ease of access to supplies, the type of remodel you want done, and many other things can greatly influence the final cost of your remodel.
Despite this, there are some average material and labor costs that you can learn about. These average costs will give you a better idea of what to financially expect when you are fixing up your bathroom.
Cost of Labor
The most expensive contractor you will hire for a bathroom remodel will likely be a plumber. Plumbers charge anywhere between $45 and $75 an hour. A tile contractor could cost as much, but generally only for complex jobs using expensive tiles.
Cost of Materials
The materials required to do a simple bathroom remodel with all new equipment and materials costs roughly $5000. This can vary significantly depending on local pricing and if you buy second-hand building materials.
Average Total Costs for Basic Remodels
On average, a simple but full bathroom remodeling job will run around $15000. This includes ceramic tile flooring and shower surround, shower plumbing, hard counter top, new fixtures, and various other simple amenities.
